MEDIA STATEMENT
OYDC MOURNS FORMER ZAMBIAN PRESIDENT RUPIAH BANDA
OYDC Zambia Board of Trustees, Management and staff have received the news of the death of former president Mr Rupiah B. Banda with great sorrow.
OYDC will remember president Banda as a true statesman who had a passion for sport and youth development as this was evident when he launched Zambia’s biggest multi-sports facility OYDC on 11 May 2010.
OYDC Zambia Board of Trustees Chairperson Simangolwa Shakalima says “Zambia mourns again. We have lost a great leader, a true statesman who loved sport and made sure that OYDC was his home whenever he was invited for several local and international events. We shall forever remember president Rupiah Banda for having launched this facility in May 2010 together with the late former International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Dr Jacques Rogge. President Banda’s vision after launching OYDC was to see many youths experience the state of the art facilities to improve their sports skills and eventually start recording more medals at competitive games such as the Commonwealth, Olympic and All Africa Games. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved family and the nation at large” he said.
President Rupiah Banda’s last visit to the OYDC was in 2016 where he attended many events and had the time to interact with different athletes and community members.
May His Soul Rest in Peace.
