OYDC ZAMBIA ACTING CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER TEMBO APPLAUDS NOCZ FOR HOSTING “OLYMPIC DAY” AT THE SPORTS FACILITY

OYDC Zambia Acting Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Tembo has paid gratitude to the National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) for staging the 2024 Olympic Day celebrations at the multisport facility.

Tembo says it is gratifying that the NOCZ on 22 June 2024 brought hundreds of children from various sports disciplines to take part in the 2024 Olympic Day which falls on 23 June and is a global celebration of the sport and getting active to commemorate the day the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was founded in 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin.

The acting Chief Executive Officer reminded sports associations in Zambia and across the region that the sports facility endeavours to make facilities available for similar events which are always seen to bring joy to many children who aspire to be future Olympians.

National Olympic Academy (NOA) Commission Chairperson Victor Banda disclosed that the Saturday celebrations mark the beginning of some of the many other activities the National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) has lined up to commemorate Olympic Day.

Banda stated that as the nation will be sending athletes to Paris 2024 which is Pierre de Coubertin’s birthplace, the NOCZ stands firm to see that the spirit of Olympism is promoted by conducting several peaceful sports activities.

During the Saturday activities staged at the OYDC Zambia, several activities were showcased starting with the Olympic Flame for Peace Torch Relay which began from the Metropolis Site in Kalundu proceeding to the Olympafrica before it touched its final destination the OYDC Zambia. Other athletes while at the OYDC Zambia displayed sporting skills in taekwondo, hockey, netball, boxing, baseball5, handball, weightlifting and Para-powerlifting.

It was a colourful event which was witnessed by several dignitaries among them visiting two Greek Olympic Gold medalists Athanasia Tsoumeleka and George Tzelilis. Others present were representatives of the Orthodox Archdiocese of Zambia, Zambia/Hellenic Olympic Organizing Committee (ZHOOC), and local sports federations among others. At the end of the event, several medals were presented to honour visiting Olympic Gold medalists and local organizations and sports associations.
