Sports Minister Mawere, urges athletes to mint medals at AUSC Region 5
Youth, Sport Child Development Minister Moses Mawere, has urged athletes traveling to Gaborone, Botswana for the AUSC Region 5 games to be focused and concentrate on winning and bringing medals to Zambia.
Speaking during the sendoff ceremony on Sunday evening held at the Olympic Youth Development Centre OYDC the Minister said he is positive that the team being sent will deliver according to the expectation of many Zambians.
He disclosed that government is behind the team and will ensure that they get the support they all need during the competition period.
“I am aware that Zambia will be participating in athletics, athletics for visually impaired, boxing football, judo, netball, swimming, and tennis at the edition of the Youth Games that will be held in Gaborone, Botswana. On behalf of the Zambian people we wish team Zambia all the very best at the 8th Edition of the AUSC Region 5 Games. I am confident this is a great team that will go and inspire others” he said.
Speaking on behalf of Team Zambia Mwansa Ngulube, a tennis player assured the minister that the athletes will come back home with medals.
74 athletes in seven disciplines Football, Netball, Tennis, Boxing, Judo, Swimming, and Athletics, will take part in the games.
The athletes will be accompanied by 26 officials which brings a total of 100 people going to the Games.
Others present during the ceremony include; Director of Sports in the Ministry of Youth Sport, and Child Development Bessie Chelemu, ZASU President Guy Phiri, Zambia Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) President Elias Mpondela, National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) Executive Director Brenda Chipande, Zambia Judo General Secretary Mabvuto Ng’uni, representatives of different Sports associations among others.
