Karl Whalley Honoured by OYDC Zambia for Contribution to Team Zambia’s Commonwealth Games Success

OYDC Zambia – Sports Development Centre has honoured Team Zambia Boxing Coach Karl Whalley with a Shield of Appreciation in recognition of his contribution to Zambia’s success at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Whalley was recognised for his role in guiding Team Zambia’s boxers, who secured two bronze medals at the Games through Catherine Mwape in the women’s 54kg category and Emmanuel Katema in the men’s 65kg category.

Prior to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Coach Whalley and the Team Zambia boxing squad camped and conducted their final preparations at OYDC Zambia, utilising the Centre’s facilities as part of their training programme.

Speaking during the presentation, OYDC Zambia Acting Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Tembo expressed appreciation to Coach Whalley and the boxing team for their dedication and for making use of OYDC Zambia as part of their preparations for the Commonwealth Games.

Tembo said the two bronze medals were a source of pride for the Centre, noting that OYDC Zambia was pleased to have played a role in supporting Team Zambia’s preparations for the prestigious international competition.

“We are proud that OYDC Zambia provided a home for Team Zambia’s boxing camp ahead of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Seeing the team return with two bronze medals is a reflection of the hard work, commitment and determination of the athletes and their technical team. We congratulate Coach Karl Whalley, Catherine Mwape and Emmanuel Katema for this remarkable achievement,” Tembo said.

Presenting the Shield of Appreciation, OYDC Zambia management commended Whalley for his dedication to athlete development and his contribution to preparing the boxers for the international stage.
